"El Recio" translates as "the tough guy", and is a more serious, mature wine, made from the product of some of Toro’s oldest vines, which are cultivated using advanced biodynamic techniques. 14 months in new French oak provide opulence and polish. Intense and opaque, this wine is a mass of deep black fruit, chocolate, roasted coffee bean, and vanilla pod aromas. Voluptuous and weighty, with a firm structure, held together by silky tannins.”
The Matsu El Recio wine is a red wine of great finesse. Nose with an intense aroma of black fruit and vanilla chocolate. The palate has a surprising, very silky, and creamy taste, and a subtle taste of fruit and mineral notes. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine, but at the same time easy to drink.
--
Matsu El Recio is a red wine produced by the winery Matsu in D.O. Toro.
This is a modern project that is committed to organic and biodynamic agriculture.
Matsu El Recio is produced 100% from the variety Tinta de Toro. The grapes come from selected vineyards between 90 and 100 years old with very limited production. For the cultivation of the vineyards, they use biodynamic agriculture: following the cycles of nature, with very little intervention and avoiding the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. In this sense, it is noteworthy that the sandy soils and the low humidity of the region mean that there is no need to use this kind of product.
For its elaboration, the must ferment for 3 weeks in 15,000-kg deposits. After this, it goes through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. In the same barrels, Matsu El Recio ages for 14 months. After this, the wine is not filtered and it is clarified avoiding aggressive processes, using only natural ones.
Vinification
Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, for 3 weeks before the wine is aged in oak for 14 months gentle filtration is used to preserve the natural characteristics of the wine.
Tasting
This is an opulent wine with lots of finesse, the nose is intense with notes of chocolate, black fruits and vanilla. In the mouth the taste is rich rounded and silky, very unctuous with subtle hints of glycerine, combined with red berry fruits lingering mineral notes. This is a full-body wine yet at the same time very easy to drink.

Very occasionally, a wine may suffer from cork taint, the unpleasant effects of a faulty closure. Cork taint is more common in bottles with a traditional cork closure, and is recognisable by a damp, rotten wood or rotten cardboard smell. It’s often quite pungent, and immediately detectable when opening a bottle for the first time. If you get a bottle you think is tainted, contact us and we’ll replace the bottle for free within 48 hours or give you a full refund – whichever you prefer.
