The maximum exponent of the Matsu range, a wine that is born from centuries-old vines and that delight us with the fruit collected after a serene and calm wait. A mature, aromatic, intense wine with well-integrated spicy and toasted notes ... An elegant and sophisticated Toro.
A deep cherry color, high lamina, with violet-colored notes in its border. Thanks to the barrel aging the wine acquired a very intense nose with mature black fruit aromas, well integrated with the toasted, spiced and smoked notes. Corpulent in the mouth with very mature and round tannins that give its sweetness.

Barrel aged, Matsu's El Viejo boasts a deep cherry colour with violet coloured notes around the rim. Full bodied, it has an intense nose of ripe black fruit and toasted, spiced and smoked notes with mature and round tannins that give it a very pleasing sweetness. In the long and persistent finish is ripe black fruit perfectly balanced with the character of French oak.
Matsu is a red wine from Toro produced by the Matsu winery. The winery is located in the region of Toro (Zamora) and is owned by Vintae group. The Toro region in northwestern Spain is renowned for intense and powerful wines.
Matsu El Viejo is 100% made from Tinta de Toro. The grapes come from ancient vineyards planted on very low production soils of sandstone and clay at about 650-700m altitude. The cultivation of the vineyard seeks not to interfere with the natural processes of the vineyard, using biodynamic farming methods.
For processing, the wine is fermented and macerated for three weeks in concrete tanks of 10,000kg. Afterwards malolactic fermentation occurs in new French oak barrels. In the same barrels, the wine is aged for 16 months. Matsu is Japanese for "wait". The wines from the Matsu collection are the result of waiting, waiting for nature to fulfil its cycles without forcing it, and waiting for the wine to develop its qualities spontaneously.
Sight: Cherry red color with a high robe, with violet notes on the edge.
Nose: Great intensity. Aromas of ripe black fruits, well integrated with toasted, spicy and smoked notes.
Mouth: Corpulent and meaty. Long and persistent aftertaste, with notes of ripe fruit and roasted notes from the barrel.
Pairing: Grilled red meats, roasted red meats and small game.

Very occasionally, a wine may suffer from cork taint, the unpleasant effects of a faulty closure. Cork taint is more common in bottles with a traditional cork closure, and is recognisable by a damp, rotten wood or rotten cardboard smell. It’s often quite pungent, and immediately detectable when opening a bottle for the first time. If you get a bottle you think is tainted, contact us and we’ll replace the bottle for free within 48 hours or give you a full refund – whichever you prefer.
